Our History

In 1970, some individual members of the Christian Reformed Church in Kingston started to think about the future accommodation needs and care needs of their elderly parents.

In 1972 a private members association was incorporated, with the object of providing Christian homes for the aged. They called it the “Association for Christian Homes for the Aged”. The name has more recently been changed to “Christian Homes Tasmania Inc.” Gerry Verdouw of Kingston was elected the first President.

The first development occurred in 1974, with the construction of the Denison Court units in Kingston.

1978 saw the construction of twelve townhouses at Wells Court, Blackmans Bay, with momentum building for the association.

The fifty two bed residential aged care facility at Hawthorn Village, Blackmans Bay, has seen continual change and was originally constructed as a hostel in 1989.

The nine modern two bedroom independent living townhouses at Freeman Court, Kingston were constructed in 1998 within the heart of Kingston, giving easy access to shopping and services,

Christian Homes Tasmania Home Care Services commenced in 1999.

The first of the independent living units at Snug Village, Snug were built in 2000 providing a short level walk to shopping or the beach.

A 54 bed residential aged care facility was constructed at Snug Village, Snug in 2002 and included permanent care and respite care facilities. This facility has since been extended to 62 beds.

35 architecturally designed modern two and three bedroom independent living townhouses were developed at Wellington Vista, Kingston, in 2009 providing easy access to services and panoramic views of Mt Wellington.

In 2014, 52 Channel Highway, Kingston was purchased for Head Office and shared services.

In 2015 CHT expanded their services to the Eastern Shore of Hobart with the acquisition of Roches Beach Living, Lauderdale, which comprises 53 townhouses.

In 2016 an additional 9 Independent Living Units were constructed at Snug Retirement Village.

In 2017, the construction of 17 new Independent Living Units and a Community Centre as part of Freeman Village in Kingston commenced.

In 2018, the former community centre at Redwood Village in Kingston was purchased for future development.

In 2021 the former Redwood Village Community Centre was demolished to create a site for future development.

In 2021, CHT was awarded an ACAR Grant from Government for an additional 14 beds and a day centre at our Snug Village facility. Property was also purchased for additional Independent Living Units at Snug Village.
